From Ratnapura turn right at Malpala on Siripagama Road and proceed to Welawatta Road to Galabada Junction.

The beginning of the Punchi Dambadiva sacred area

April 14, 1981.  The Most Venerable Gilimale Chandraloka Thero, who visited the river Komaliya called Rathgaga, with the assistance of the surrounding villagers built a small hut surrounded by a wax-covered wax cloth and at the same time built a leaf-roofed Dharma Hall to perform religious rites.  The full moon day of the month of Vesak was celebrated on the full moon day.  A large number of devotees gathered for the first Pinkama and the construction of a permanent Dharmashala Mandir was started at this small temple which is gaining more and more love from the general public day by day.  The Dharmashala was a 70 feet long and 50 feet wide building with several rooms reserved for the monastery.  Work on this Dharmashala Mandir, which commenced on June 3, 1982, was soon completed.  The hall is currently used for the alms hall.

In the course of time, this sacred place developed rapidly and became a place of attraction for the people of Lak and the people of the world.  The main objective of the construction of this shrine was to provide an opportunity to the devotees who have difficulty in visiting the Dambadiva Shrine to visit and worship at the Dambadiva Shrines.  Accordingly, most of the shrines have been completed and many more are under construction.  After the completion of all these creations, even those who could not go to Dambadiva will be able to come to the "Punchi Dambadiva" sacred area and worship the four shrines.

The world's first eighty-five Shravaka Buddha Raja Maha Viharaya, currently being constructed at the Punchi Dambadiva Viharaya, was inaugurated on June 20, 1986 by the first Executive President of the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka, JR Jayewardene, in less than 2 years and 10 months.  Became a masterpiece of high wonder.  The incomparable Damsabha Mandapa is depicted in the middle floor of the Vihara Mandiraya, depicting Lord Samma Sambuddha, who passed away, holding Dhamma discussions with the eight Arahants of the Dambadiva Jethavanaramaya.  In this temple, the Sufi commentary depicting the way in which the Buddha received definite commentaries on the statues of the Supreme Buddha, from the Supreme Buddha Deepankara to the Supreme Buddha named Kasyapa, who descended to earth in a hundred thousand kalpas, has been erected in this circle.

Accordingly, 24 statues of the Sufi Buddha and 80 statues of the eight great Arahants have been created under one roof in one temple in one place.  This is called "Maha Viharaya".

The largest Dharmashala Mandir in Sri Lanka built in the temple was named after the Most Venerable Kudawe Vinayanansha Nayaka Thero as a tribute to his Guru Thero and was named as "Sri Vinayavansa Dharmashala Mandiraya".

As a result of the large number of people from all over the island who visit the temple daily for the annual Muradana, Pohewas celebrations and pilgrimage, this Dharmashala Mandiraya was built as a means of accommodation.  The foundation stone was laid on January 13, 1987. Despite various problems, it was completed in a short period of three years.

The foundation stone was laid on November 11, 1993 for the construction of the only two storied stupa in Sri Lanka.  It is the largest dagoba ever built in the Sabaragamuwa Province and has become the only two storied maha seya built in Sri Lanka.  The womb of this Se Radhun is two storeys. In the basement, the Ten Paramita stories of Lord Buddha have been created and many Jataka stories have been created.  The four statues of the four great Buddhas and the Dagoba where the relics are enshrined have been erected.

Planting of Jaya Sri Bodhi ...

Former President of Sri Lanka Sir Ranasinghe Premadasa also presented a golden fence and a golden canopy to protect the sacred Vijaya Sri Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree in the central part of Dodiva, India.  Canopy and Golden Fence Rathganga Punchi Dodiva Maha Viharadhipathi Most Venerable Gilimale Chandraloka Thero officiated at the renovation and ceremonial opening.  A branch of the Bo tree was provided on the decision of the Institutions.  The Bo tree was planted.  It will go down in history as the second Bodhi branch to be planted in Punchi Dodiva after coming to Sri Lanka after the Sri Maha Bodhi branch planted at the Mahapura in Mahapura.

The construction of the statue of the great Buddhagaya was carried out by talented Indian engineers on March 5, 2015 under the patronage of President Metripala Sirisena.

In addition, a branch of the Ananda Bodhi tree has been planted and is flourishing.  All these shrines can be seen and worshiped by those who visit the Punchi Dambadiva sacred area.
