Sithulpawwa in Sri Lanka

Built by King Kavantissa, this shrine was formerly known as the "Chittala Pabbata Viharaya".  Numerous natural caves have been found here.  These caves were inhabited by monks, and some of the caves also bear the names of those who sacrificed and their titles.  There are paintings in some of the caves.

The book "Sammoha Vinodani" states that there were 24,000 monks living in these caves.  AD  The Mahavamsa states that King Vasabha, who ruled Ceylon in the first century, built 10 stupas here.  .

There is a large cave at the foot of the rock and in the past it was used as a house of idols.  The statues inside are very ancient.  The art has now faded.  These are considered to belong to the latter part of Anuradhapura.  There is also a dagoba built on the rock near this temple.  In addition, two Buddha statues and two Bodhisattva statues have been identified in this sacred area.  In addition to these, the ancient ruins of many other creations can be identified here.
