Kantalawa in Sri Lanka

It is believed that the technology of building reservoirs in Sri Lanka was at its peak between the Kingdom of Anuradhapura and the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa.  It is said that most of the large reservoirs in Sri Lanka were built during this period.  But other large lakes such as Minneriya Lake and Kaudulla Lake belong to the early 3rd century.  Although not as large as those huge lakes, Kantale Lake is a reservoir that can be seen on the way to Trincomalee and was noticed during the colonial period.

Kantale has been known as "Gantalawa" since the time of kings.

When the government tried to colonize the river basin in the early 1950s, a group of early villagers camped in the jungle and built only a small passage from the main camp to enter it.  The leader of the group erected a small sign at the top of the road and named it "Gantalawa Camp Road".

We are pleased that the capacity of the Kantale Reservoir has been greater than that of Parakrama, Kaudulla and Minneriya since the 1986 renovation.

Kantale tank type has an area of 23 m2 and its total capacity is 140.6 m3.  The height of the dam is 16.75 m and the length is 2.5 km.
